Chief Daniel Oju Kalio was the Paramount ruler of Okrika.

Early Life/Career

Chief Daniel Oju Kalio[0] was born in 1857, and educated at Bonny Day School in the early 1870s.

He became Chief of Kalio Fuamakiri House in 1877.

A diplomat par excellence who was appointed paramount ruler of Okrika in 1896 by the British authorities.

On November, 1906, he entered into an agreement on behalf of himself and the Okrika people with the African Trading Company(ATC) of London to establish a trading station in Okrika.

Chief Oju Kalio led Okrika chiefs to sign the Isaka port agreement with Lord Lugard making the Okrika people to receive 100 pounds as compensation.

He along with Chief Wobo of Diobu,Adiele Ejerimele and Ngawa negotiated with the British and signed the 1913 agreement which served as the precursor of the seaport and Railway Terminus in Port Harcourt.

He was a member of the Abolition of Slavery Conference at Bonny in 1901 representing Okrika, Eleme and Ikwerre.

Chief Oju Kalio was the head of native courts at Okrika, Eleme and Ikwerre.

He was paid by the British as a political agent for Port Harcourt from 1914-28.

He contributed greatly to the development of St. Peter's Anglican School, Okrika,St.

Mary's Anglican School Kalio Ama and St. Crprians Anglican School, Port Harcourt.

A foremost evangelist, who led a team of Okrika evangelists to plant St. Cyprians Church,PH in 1916 in addition to spear heading the construction of St. Peter's Anglican Church Okrika.

He died in 1928.
