Chiara de Blasio Tells Her Story
Chiara de Blasio is the daughter of Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio. She is a Santa Clara University alumni, where she studied Criminal justice and minored in Women's and Gender Studies. [12]
Background
Chiara de Blasio is the daughter of Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray. She also has one brother, Dante de Blasio. She grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and attended The Beacon School in Hell's Kitchen, located in the Manhattan area. For college, she attended Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California.
Growing up, de Blasio has dealt with struggles and substance abuse. In an essay published in xoJane, an online magazine, she openly discussed these struggles, expanding on the process of recovery, and the hardships that come with it. She described herself as having been "miserable" throughout her entire adolescence. She closed, stating that she was "born with the disease of addiction." [13] As her father, Bill de Blasio, ran for mayor throughout the spring of 2013, she was “overpowered” by depression and addiction, and her “life didn’t seem worthwhile,” she said. [1] Following the release of the speech, she was awarded in Washington, D.C. by United States Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, for opening up about her mental health and addiction struggles in her essay. [15]
De Blasio is heavily involved in activism.
In 2009, she volunteered for Planned Parenthood, held an internship with the mayor's office to tackle domestic violence. Her mother, the First Lady of New York City, believes that these efforts helped "shape her life's work." And also prompt her to change her major to women and Gender Studies.
Arrest
On Saturday, May 30, 2020, de Blasio was arrested during a protest near Union Square. She was taken into custody around 10:30 p.m. after cops declared an unlawful assembly on 12th Street and Broadway in the Lower Manhattan area. She was allegedly blocking traffic on Broadway and was arrested for refusing to move. [5]
The mayors daughter didn't toss anything, but refused to leave the area when cops ordered her to do so, sources said.
That same Saturday night, The Sergeants Benevolent Association disclosed the police report on Twitter.
The tweet was quickly deleted and the NYPD's union account was suspended.
[6] The Police Department, who does not normally release sensitive information, disclosed de Blasio's height, weight, address, date of birth, and driver's license information.
[7] Along with the release of this information, the image was captioned, stating,
How can the NYPD protect the city of NY from rioting anarchist when the Mayors object throwing daughter is one of them.
Now we know why he is forbidding Mounted Units to be mobilized and keeping the NYPD from doing their jobs.
De Blasio's father claims he became aware of the arrest after an inquiry from the media at a news conference.
When asked about the situation, he said he would let his daughter 'speak for herself on the details.' Additionally, he stated how he feels about her actions,
...I admire that she was out there trying to change something she thought was unjust, and doing it in a peaceful matter.
