ChenWei Guo
ChenWei Guo was a Chinese student at the University of Utah. [1]
ChenWei Guo went by the American name of "Kyle" while studying in the USA.
Life & Activities
He is remembered as being the kind of person who was the fizz in the pop of life.
Friends and family called him an outgoing, gregarious person who loved hiking and the outdoors.
Guo was studying pre-computer science and was a peer adviser in the international Student and Scholar Services Office.
Death
On October 30, 2017, Guo was shot to death in a car jacking by Austin Boutain. The shooting started a manhunt for Austin Boutain, who was also being sought for questioning in a Colorado homicide.
Boutain was arrested at a Salt Lake City library following a call from a librarian.
Conversion
ChenWei Guo read The Book of Mormon when it was given to him by a friend.
The friend said that it would answer many of his questions.
ChenWei Guo had never heard of Jesus Christ.
He was taught from a young age by his schools and parents that there was no god.
The Book of Mormon made little sense to ChenWei Guo in the beginning of his conversion.
But he was haunted by the admonition of his friend to continue reading it and all his questions would be answered.
Guo said he enjoyed many hobbies such as skiing and horseback riding that brought him great joy, but it was nothing compared to the joy he felt when he prayed.
Tears filled his eyes and as he rose to his feet, he understood that there was a god, and that he could not deny it.
Guo asked a friend how to be baptized, and Guo was told to go to Hong Kong.
Beijing is in the north and Hong Kong in the south -- a 24 hour train ride.
Guo asked his parents for permission to be baptized.
Guo's parents refused and thought Guo was crazy.
Guo began reading out loud to them from the Book of Mormon every day.
Still they refused and believed itwas crazy.
But after about three weeks of persistence, Guo's parents allowed him to join the church.
Guo was taught all the missionary discussions in one day once he arrived in Hong Kong.
Guo was only permitted by the Chinese government to stay in Hong Kong for seven days.
Guo returned to Beijing and began attending the only congregation in the city of 30 million people.
After a few months, Guo's mother started attending with him, and Guo baptized Mrs. Guo in a swimming pool after messing up the prayer three or four times, because of nervousness.
When Guo told the university for a leave of absence of two years to do "humanitarian work", it was told that a mission is crazy and Guo might lose the opportunity to continue studying at the school.
A few months ago, Guo got a notice from the university expulsion from school.
Guo's parents had started attending church every Sunday and had stopped drinking beer, tea, and coffee and had stopped smoking.
Guo's father said after completing a mission that Guo would baptize his father.
