Chanda Prescod-Weinstein

Chanda Prescod-Weinstein (33 in 2016) is a theoretical astrophysicist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

She is the 63rd African-American woman to earn a PhD in physics.

In 2016 she denounced the American Physical Society for congratulating Trump on his victory while calling for more funding for physics research.

She cited the fact that the group never endorsed the Black Lives Matter group.

Chanda is from El Sereno in East Los Angeles. She graduated from Harvard College (2003). She earned a Master in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California Santa Cruz (2005). She also did research at the Perimeter Institute working with Lee Smolin in 2006. Her doctoral dissertation was on “Cosmic Acceleration as Quantum Gravity Phenomenology” at thePerimeter Institute and the University of Waterloo under the joint direction of Dr. Smolin and Professor Niayesh Afshordi in September 2010. She was a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Postdoctoral Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She is married.

She and her husband are Jewish.

He is originally from Taiwan.
