Candace Pickens was a 23 year old pregnant mother from Asheville, North Carolina.

She had a son Zachaeus with her ex-boyfriend Daquan Waters.

She worked as a server at Asaka Japanese Cuisine and was studying to be a nurse at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.

Dixon was a member of the the 4 Tre Gangster Crips, a Los Angeles, California street gang and served 75 days in prison for his role in a gun battle that gang had with rivals.

The night before the discovery of Pickens’ body on Thursday May 12, 2016 a resident who lives near Jones Park on Grace Avenue called the police at 10:41 p.m. to report what “sounded like some gunshots".

Asheville Police Officer Michael Gehring was sent to the area at 10:42 p.m. and cleared the scene at 10:47 p.m. after finding nothing unusual.

The officer never left his vehicle while "searching" the area but was under no requirement to do so under department guidelines, police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse said Monday.

Daquan Waters the father of Zachaeus believed that the police should have searched the area more thoroughly, especially since the gunshots were reported near an elementary school.

A Go Fund Me page originally set up by a Vanessa Peterson who was a close friend of Candice.

The page has since been transferred to the Pickens family, who plan to use the money for Pickens’s funeral and for Pickens’s son, who remains hospitalized.
