Bush Hamdan
Bush Hamdan is the former University of Washington's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was named as Eliah Drinkwitz's offensive assistant in January 2020.
Early Life
Hamdan was born in Kuwait. His mother is Pakistani and his father, a nuclear scientist, is Palestinian. They were on vacation in the United States U.S. when Iraq invaded Kuwait and lost their home and cars during the invasion. The family stayed in the U.S. and moved to the Washington, D.C. area where his father began working for the government. His older brother, Gibran Hamdan, played quarterback at Indiana and played briefly in the NFL. [1]
Career
Early beginnings
As a player, Hamdan was a backup quarterback at Boise State University. He got his start in coaching as a student assistant at Colorado in 2009, the same year current Mizzou defensive coordinator Ryan Walters served as a student assistant in Boulder, Colorado. [1]
Coaching
In 2018, Hamdan oversaw a Husky offense that helped the UW earn its second Pac-12 championship in the last three years, as well as its third straight 10-win season and third New Years Six bowl berth in a row.
The Huskies' 2018 offense compiled 3,337 passing yards, the fourth-highest total in UW history.
In terms of total offense, the UW's 5,805 yards were third-most ever at the school, while 414.6 yards per game ranked sixth in program history.
The 2018 squad also posted top-10 marks in total first downs (310, 4th), first downs by rushing (130, tie-6th), first downs by passing (156, 2nd).
Hamdan oversaw fourth-year starting quarterback Jake Browning, who finished his career as one of the most prolific QBs in Pac-12 lore, with 12,296 career yards and 94 career passing TDs, both top-six totals in conference history. [7]
He spent 2017 as the quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons, plying his trade with Matt Ryan, one of the NFL’s top passers. Ryan was sixth in the league in passing yards (4,095) and the Falcons advanced to the Divisional Round of the playoffs after winning a wild-card game on the road over the Los Angeles Rams. [7]
Hamdan served as the Huskies' wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator in 2016, during which the UW broke numerous offensive records and wideout John Ross III earned All-America honors, catching 81 passes for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns.
He also coached Dante Pettis, who scored 15 receiving TDs in 2016, making he and Ross the most prolific scoring receiver duo in Pac-12 history. [7]
Hamdan originally joined the Husky staff prior to the start of the 2015 season as an offensive quality control assistant, reuniting him with his former college coach, Chris Petersen.
