Brice Taton

Brice Taton

Brice Taton (1981 - 2009) was supporter of French football club Toulouse FC who died in Belgrade after being attacked by supporters of FK Partizan.

Taton was born in Toulouse where he received an education and later worked as clerk in one of the home equipment stores. Since early days he was fanatical supporter of Toulouse FC, formally joining fan group Indians Tolosa 93 in 2001, and serving as its treasurer between 2004 and 2006.

Taton was among the group of Toulouse FC fans that came to Belgrade to support their club in a match against FK Partizan at 2009–10 UEFA Europa League group stage. The match was scheduled on September 17rh 2009 at 21:00. Before the match group of around 15 Toulouse fans visited Irish Pub in Obilićev Venac area in the centre of Belgrade. They were suddenly attacked by a group of 40 masked Partizans fans armed with clubs. While most of them received only minor injuries, Taton was severely beaten, dragged on the pavement thrown over the flight of stairs. He was brought to hospital where he succumbed to injuries on September 29th.

Serbian police managed to identify most of the attackers.

Fourteen of them were charged with attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.

In January 2011 they received sentences between 4 and 35 years of prison.

Sentences were reduced in January 2012 after appeal.

Aftermath

UEFA decided not to punish FK Partizan for the murder committed by its fans, since it occured outside the stadium. It nevertheless recommended that Partizan fans don't travel to Toulouse where Belgrade club had return match with Toulouse FC on December 3rd. Club replied by not organising group travel of its fans to French city.

Case of Brice Taton deeply divided Serbian society.

While many applauded the speed of authorities' reaction and harhsness of penalties, in Serbian nationalist circles it was perceived as another example of Serbian government bending to the demands of powerful Western countries and punishing murderers of French citizens much harsher than perpetrators of similar crimes committed against Serbian citizens.

Controversial television host Boris Malagurski shot documentary The Presumption of Justice dedicated to the case, arguing that one of the fans was unjustly sentenced and that the murder charge was too harsh.

Ljubomir Marković Kića, one of the leaders of FK Partizan fans involved and later sentenced for killing of Brice Taton, was himself murdered on November 1st 2019.[3]
