Briar Stewart
Briar Stewart is a National News Reporter with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), based out of Edmonton, Alberta.
Career
Briar Stewart became a National News Reporter for CBC in 2010.
She primarily reports from Alberta, but has covered stories around the world, including in the United Kingdom, Washington, D.C., and Africa.
On May 18, 2016 a couple Bill Briscoe and Ninna Forte named their daughter Briar after Briar Stewart.
Ninna's due date came after residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta were told to evacuate the city because of the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. The couple was driving away from the city and listened to Briar's coverage before being inspired to name their child after Briar when she was born that day.
Briar has previously worked as a Radio Reporter and a Video Journalist for CBC.
Awards
In 2014, Briar was selected by the International Center for Journalists for a Global Health fellowship, where she went to South Africa and Mozambique to report on child mortality and maternal mortality.
In 2010, Briar won an Alberta Film and Television Award for her documentary, "Journey to Jamaica." It told the story of the special bond which developed between a group of students as they struggled to stay away from gangs.
Education
Briar graduated from Ryerson University in 2005 with a bachelors degree in journalism. She also studied at Bournemouth University as part of a foreign exchange during her time at Ryerson.
Briar was also awarded a scholarship by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania rankings to attend a series of business seminars designed for journalists.
