Brandy Vela was an 18-year-old student from Texas City, Texas. She attended Texas City High School in the Texas City Independent School District. Brandy committed suicide in November 2016 after being bullied, cyber stalked and harassed by her ex-boyfriend Andres Villagomez and his girlfriend Karinthya Romero.
Brandy Vela (Texas City, Texas) has been bullied by her peers for years, with people making fake Facebook accounts to harass her and send untraceable messages of intimidation on her cell phone. The bullies targeted Brandy's weight. Another tactic her bullies used was putting her pictures and phone number on dating websites and say she was offering free sex to people that called her. In March 2017, the bullies were identified as Brandy's ex-boyfriend Andres Villagomez and his new girlfriend Karinthya Romero, they were both charged and detained by police.
Brandy and her family contacted the school about her bullying over thanksgiving break and they recommended that she should change her number. She did, but the bullies still found a way to contact and harass her.
Death
On November 29, 2016, Brandy's family found her pinned up against the wall with a gun to the chest.
They pleaded her not to shoot, but she pulled the trigger anyway in front of her parents and grandparents while her sister Jackie Vela heard the shot from another room.
Before committing suicide, Brandy sent a text message to her siblings saying 'how much she loved them and that she was sorry for everything.'
Posthumous Harassment
After her death, Vela is still being bullied online.
Following her funeral, someone made a social media page in her name.
The posts on the page were first sincere, but then became harassing in nature; One of the posts shows a smiling Brandy with the words "my face when you shoot yourself in front of your family."
Another is a stick figure holding a gun with the words, "oops am I dead?" A third shows a gun hidden inside a book.
Perpetrators
On March 16, 2017, Karinthya Romero and Andres Villagomez, who was Brandy's ex-boyfriend were arrested for harassing, cyber bullying, and stalking Brandy before she committed suicide.
Romero is charged with stalking and online impersonation, felonies punishable by two to 10 years in prison.
Court documents allege that she, on multiple occasions, made threatening and harassing phone calls to Vela.
In interviews shortly after the suicide, Raul Vela said his daughter changed her cell phone number but her tormentors always found her.
Romero also is accused of setting up fake Facebook pages in Brandy Vela's name to post content that was embarrassing, intimidating and harassing to the woman.
The indictment charges Villagomez with unlawful disclosure or promotion of intimate visual material, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.
Court documents allege that he provided photographs to be posted on the internet that portrayed Vela in sexually graphic poses - images obtained from Vela that were meant to be private.
Romero is being held on bonds totaling $20,000, while Villagomez is jailed on $2,500 bond.
Galveston County prosecutor Bill Reed said he's not aware of the two having attorneys.
Personal Life
Brandy has an older brother, Victor, and two older sisters, Michelle and Jackie.
Before she died, Brandy worked at Landry's Restaurant. She worked there for two years, first as a hostess and then as a server.
She had a love for animals.
Her dream was to graduate high school and pursue a veterinarian career.
Brandy enjoyed listening to Jasmine V, Austin Mahone, and Deztini Farinas. She was a selfie enthusiast and was part of a Facebook group where people shared their Snapchats and selfies.
