Johnny Bratton Was From Chicago

Johnny Bratton Was From Chicago

Chapter four of the book is titled “Some Thoughts On The Passing Of Smokin' Joe Frazier".

Frazier fought Muhammad Ali three times and George Foreman twice.

Bobby Chacon, Sonny Liston & Joe Louis

Chapter ten is called “Coffee With A Warrior".

It describes Raspanti's encounter with Bobby Chacon. Chacon was a regular on American Broadcasting Company's Wide World of Sports in the 1970's and 1980's. He was on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel where he was interviewed by Larry Merchant in 2001. Chapter seventeen covers the Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns bouts of 1982 and 1989. Chapter eighteen tells the story of Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay. Their second bout was controversial as some thought that the bout which was held in Lewiston, Maine was fixed. Clay later changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Chapter twenty seven covers the "Thrilla in Manilla" boxing match of 1975 with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Chapter forty two is about Joe Louis. Louis was the World Heavyweight champion for twelve years.

Johnny Bratton & Johnny Saxton

Chapter forty five is titled “A Tale Of Two Johnny’s".

Raspanti tells the stories of former champions Johnny Bratton and Johnny Saxton. Both men attained money and notoriety through boxing and lost it all. Bratton made $400,000 through his professional boxing matches. Both won titles in their early twenties, lost them soon after and they fought against each other. They were broke and out of boxing by the time they were twenty eight. Saxton won the lineal world welterweight title in a controversial fashion against Kid Gavilan. Saxton was managed in part of his career by mob figure Frank Palermo.

The following is an excerpt from a maxboxing.com article written by Raspanti:

In 1956, Bratton was admitted to the Manteno State Mental Hospital. In those days, boxing wasn’t taken into consideration when diagnosing brain trauma. The hospital considered him crazy, especially when he kept escaping to downtown Chicago, to listen to music and hang out with old friends. Recognized wherever he went, some gave him money, one bought him a suit. Johnny Bratton was living in a nursing home on the South Side of Chicago. His life had been like an arc of bleakness, to brilliance, and back again. Bratton harbored no bitterness. He told friends he was doing alright.

Excerpt From Book

Raspanti wrote the following in the book:

San Francisco 2010. I’m a rock thrown from the site of the 1955 battle between Rocky Marciano and Archie Moore.

I’m ringside and it’s hot.

Very hot.

Two fighters are battling it out directly above me.

They grunt as they throw punches.

I feel a mist and notice something red on my notebook.
