People cheering
The #BirdieSanders movement was an internet viral campaign that began in late March 2016.
It started due to an occurrence at a political event on March 25, 2016 at a Bernie Sanders rally in Portland, Oregon. A small bird visited the building and stood on the podium as Bernie Sanders (Politician) delivered his speech to supporters.
The Event
Meme.
At one point during the event, Sanders was speaking to the audience about education issues in the country but the crowd started laughing and pointing at something on the ground near his podium.
That got Sander's attention, so he interrupted his speech and turned to see what the people were pointing at.
When he noticed the bird on the floor, a small sparrow, he broke into a big laugh as everyone else cheered.
He then proceeded "Now you see, this bird doesn't know it..." but was again interrupted when the bird took off and landed on his podium, staring to him from on top of his campaign's slogan sign.
It was at that point that Sanders' expressions were pretty much priceless and the entire crowd burst into cheers and a standing ovation.
When the bird flew away, Sanders said, "I think there's maybe some symbolism here... I know it doesn't look like it but that bird is really a dove asking us for world peace.
No more wars."
After the symbolic moment, Twitter activity quickly increased with the #BirdieSanders hashtag going viral, which ended up as being one of the top trending hashtags of that day.
