Big Baller Brand is an American lifestyle and apparel company. It was founded by LaVar Ball, the father of famed UCLA basketball played Lonzo Ball. It was launched in 2016 by LaVar Ball in conjunction with his son Lonzo Ball. In April 2017, Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour all rejected offers to partner with Big Baller Brand and Lonzo Ball in a licensing deal. However, former NBA player Stephon Marbury has expressed interest in helping Big Baller Brand partner with a Chinese discount sports apparel company.
LaVar Ball has said repeatedly in interviews that Big Baller Brand will be a company with a "billion dollar brand" valuation.
The brand is reported to be a sensational hit among local residents and players of the Chino Hills, CA area where the Ball family reside. According to reports by Rob Goldberg, the Big Baller Brand is also popular among parts of the UCLA basketball fanbase, although LaVar Ball's marketing strategies have been previously criticized by UCLA boosters and sports donors.
History
The name of Big Baller Brand originated from an early youth AAU basketball team created by LaVar Ball named Big Ballers VXT, which featured his sons as players and himself as the head coach. LaVar Ball has stated that part of the vision of Big Baller Brand is to threaten and innovate on the traditional endorsement models of professional sports in America, particularly the NBA. As of April 2017, Ball has stated that the company is selling an average of "100 orders a day" which would place the annual revenue of the brand at over $1.8 million.
The official brand and legal entity was created in 2016 by the Lavar family and inspired by the 3 Ball brothers from Chino Hills, CA: Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo Ball. LaVar Ball has said that each letter represents a different Ball sibling. The company claims that their mission "is to provide a clothing line that is a reflection of what every Big Baller in the world expresses through what they wear." LaVar Ball has said in interviews that part of the reason for creating Big Baller Brand was that he and his sons can own the brand that they wear and that the ownership is empowering. He has said that one of the reasons that he created Big Baller Brand was because he say that Nike had created brands for Kobe Bryant but that Bryant is not the owner of his "Black Mamba" image.
During the 2017 UCLA Basketball season, cross-town rival University of Southern California had filed a complaint to the NCAA about Lonzo Ball wearing Big Baller Brand Attire. The NCAA refused to sanction Lonzo Ball citing that it worked with UCLA administration to remedy the issue.
Zo2 (Big Baller Brand's First Shoe)
Big Baller Brand's first shoe (the Zo2) is being sold for $495.
The Zo2 Slide
Despite not coming to a co-branding agreement with any major shoe endorser (including Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour), Big Baller Brand released its first shoe in May 2017. LaVar Ball decided to go the independent route and released the Lonzo Ball's shoe: the Zo2.
There are three versions of the Lonzo Ball shoe:
The Zo2 Prime ($495): the original version of the shoe
The Zo2 WET Autographs edition ($995): this is a limited edition, which will come in a key-locked glass box with a floor mirror, LED lights and Lonzo Ball's autograph
The Zo2 Slide The Zo2 Slide ($220): the flip-flop version of the shoe; it features python microfiber texture, patent leather heel logos and a gel outsole with a hand-painted DeLorean finish
All three products are currently available for pre-order on the Big Baller Brand website.
The Zo2 shoes will be delivered by November 24, 2017.
Lonzo Ball will be wearing this shoe in the NBA, making him the first player to have his own independently made signature shoe entering the NBA Draft.
In an interview with Colin Cowherd in May 2017, Ball said that if the big shoe companies like Nike, Addidas, or UnderArmour want to make a deal with his Big Baller Brand, the asking price is $3 billion. He also said that Baller has sold between 400 to 500 ZO2 shoes.
