Bekstvo ("The Escape" in English) is the ninth episode of the drama television series Povratak otpisanih, originally aired on Yugoslav Radiotelevision network (JRT) on February 26th 1978. The plot deals with Serbian collaborationist government and its Special Police leaving Belgrade at the eve of the battle for the city and resistance reacting to it..
Plot
In the cold opening Bešević, chief of Belgrade Police calls Krsta Mišić, chief of Special Police, and tells him that the collaborationist Serbian government led by Milan Nedić will leave Belgrade for Wiener Neustadt and that his service must evacuate too.
Marija is visited by her older sister Ana, who refused to meet her for years, ashamed of her work in collaborationist Special Police.
Ana is concerned that Marija will be tried and shot after liberation and offers her contact within resistance in order to help her clear her name.
Banjica concentration camp is closing down, and Bešević and Gestapo Major Krieger discuss what to to do with prisoners. There are divided into three groups - first is to be shot immediately, second is to be brought to Germany into labour camps and the third is released, only to be handled by Chetnik death squads who were given their addresses. After the first group is shot and second taken away, Stana and Tihi observe the third group being released. Tihi is displeased that the resistance couldn't have prevented execution, but Stana tells him that it wasn't practical. Some of the third group are, however, rescued. When Chetnik death squad arrive to house of one former prisoners, they are greeted and taken out by Prle, Tihi and Mrki.
Special Police is preparing for the evacuation by taking their files and putting into archive that would travel with them during evacuation.
While this happens, extraordinary meeting of Nedić's government is held at midnight and ten Special Police agents are taken from the building in order to provide security.
Soon afterwards, Krieger's aide arrives to Special Police headquarters in order to bring present for Marija - an expensive necklace.
Marija uses that as an opportunity to slip away and phone her apartment and give away details of evacuation.
She is met by her boss Bešević who at first seems to suspect her as possible mole, but this interrogation is only an excuse to offer himself as an alternative to "barbarous" Krieger. He tells her that two of them might start new life after the war and, to show that he is serious, gives her special pass for the train leaving Belgrade with high officials. While this happens, cabinet meeting, presided by Milan Nedić's deputy is held and the minister openly admit that the Germany and they with them, are losing the war. Minister Rakić is the only optimistic, expressing hope that the Western Allies and Soviets might start another conflict and that their collaborationist government in exile might, at the end of the day, triumphantly return to Serbia.
Prle, dressed as a Serbian Orthodox priest visits real priest, who is revealed to be brother of prominent resistance figure named Kale. Priest supports resistance and provides information about the group of Soviet prisoner of wars Germans use as slave labour in the quarry. Fearing that they might be shot, Prle with the help of priest stop German truck, take German soldiers prisoner and release group of Red Army soldiers which are led by a Don Cossack.
While collaborators and even Gestapo flee, German military, led by General von Friedrichs, is actually prepares for a serious fight for the city.
Their preparations are observed by Mrki and Badža.
Tihi, using Marija's pass, manages to infiltrate Partisan intelligence officer into train with evacuating collaborationist leaders.
During the evacuation, gendarme and a Special Police agent are ordered to bring archive from Special Police headquarters to the train.
Prle, with the help of Cane Kurbla, ambushes them and forces them to drive towards Partisan territory, successfuly passing through one of collaborationists' last checkpoints.
Prle after succesful mission goes into night to visit village of Kumodraž.
