Becky With The Good Hair (Beyonce)
Becky With The Good Hair (Beyonce)
"Becky With The Good Hair" is a controversy involving two much-discussed, much-celebrated lines from Beyoncé's 2016 album Lemonade [0].
In the two controversial lines Beyoncé sings "He only want me when I'm not there/ He better call Becky with the good hair"[0].
The lines imply that her husband JAY Z cheated on her with a woman with "good" hair [11].
In this line Beyoncé discusses racial undertones by implying that Becky has straight hair or "good" hair rather than the curly hair than many black women have which is often portrayed as unattractive in pop culture [11].
Beyoncé fans known as the Bey Hive have hurled insults at the women accused of being Becky [17].
There is speculation that the line refers to Rachel Roy, Rita Ora, or Karrine Steffans.
Rachel Roy
Rachel Roy was speculated to be Becky since she posted an Instagram photo with the caption "Good hair don't care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always.
Live in the light #nodramaqueens."
[14].
The words "Good hair don't care" is what to lead to this speculation [14].
Rachel Roy has denied the allegations and says that she is happy with her marriage to Damon Dash [5].
Some of the Beyoncé fans outraged by these allegations accidentally attacked the celebrity chef Rachael Ray online instead of Rachel Roy [17].
Rachael Ray responded to the controversy by jokingly posting a recipe for Lemonade [9].
Rita Ora
Rita Ora was speculated to be "Becky" by the Bey Hive after she posted an Snapchat photo of herself in a bra with lemons on it [1].
Beyoncé fans took this to mean that she was Becky since the title of the album which brings up Becky is Lemonade [2].
Rita Ora and Beyoncé proved that Rita was not Becky by showing their friendship with a Snapchat selfie together with the caption family [2].
Rita Ora also wore a pin saying "NOT BECKY" to the 2016 MET Gala to poke fun at the controversy [2].
Although Katy Perry was not accused of being Becky she also wore a pin saying "NOT BECKY" to the MET Gala [20].
Karrine Steffans
Video vixen, Karrine Steffans claimed to be "Becky" in the sense that she had an affair with JAY Z 15 years ago, which was before his marriage to Beyoncé [12].
The two met while she was modelling in JAY Z's music video for the song "Hey Papi"[19].
In her essay about the subject she claims to have been the Becky for many men and had many affairs [19].
