Balaji attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he played Squash (sport) for four years, was elected Captain, and was the only MIT player to play in the 2008/2009 individual nationals. [1] He earned a BS in Chemical Engineering in 2009. [1] He attained a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder where his thesis work involved developing a scaffold to enhance articular cartilage regeneration in the knees and hips. [1]
Career
Early in his career, Balaji was a Research Associate at the Langer Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technolog and later at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
[1] In 2012 alongside Nani Xiu, Balaji founded Nanoly Bioscience, a company that develops polymers that allow vaccines to survive without being refrigerated.

The company received funds from Intel, Dell, Duke University and Colorado State. In addition, the company earned the Young Innovator Award sponsored by Microsoft, Airbus's 2015 Materials and Manufacturing Award, Intel's Top Social Innovation, NASA's Top 10 New Technology Companies, Dell's Social Innovation Award, Kairos Society's Top 50 College Startups, and National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance's VentureLab Award.
