Rusell Horning's flossing dance became popular after he performed it during a live Saturday Night Live performance of Katy Perry's song "Swish Swish" in May 2017. It has since become a trend among young people and has been performed by many celebrities in social media videos. The floss has been featured in TV shows like The Simpsons and airing on Universal Kids, Disney XD, and Disney Channel shows. Prior to 2017, the dance move had been featured in numerous YouTube videos, the earliest of which dates back to October 2010. [18] [21]

Flossing is featured in the 2017 video game Fortnite Battle Royale, developed and published by Epic Games, as a limited-time dance "emote" as a reward from the Battle Pass Season 2 that can be performed by the characters while playing. Flossing has become popular in schools due to the popularity of Fortnite and because of support from parents and administrators, as flossing is seen as an inoffensive dance move. [19]

Lawsuit

In 2018, Horning's mother Antia Redd sued Epic Games on her son's behalf, alleging that the floss dance was owned by him and that the developer's video game Fortnite featured it unlawfully. Actor Alfonso Ribeiro of "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," along with three others, also sued Epic Games over their use of various dance moves in Fortnite. [16] [22]

Ribeiro and Redd both voluntarily dismissed their lawsuits after the United States Supreme Court ruled in early 2019 such a suit has no legal merit if copyright registration has not yet been finalized.

Backpack has about 2 million followers on Instagram and 468,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel as of July 2020.[11][12]
