The Beachcraft six-seater Austin's family was in after the crash
On September 1, 2003, around 6:00 pm, 8-year-old Austin Hatch and his family of five boarded Beachcraft six-seater for a flight from their family cabin in Michigan to their in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
With his father flying the plane, Austin was sitting in the co-pilot seat.
He noticed that some of the lights on some of the airplane's screens went out while they were in the air.
After checking the instrument panel with a flashlight, they realized that some equipment failure took place and the engine was no longer working.
The plane crashed into a utility pole and crashed just after 8:00 pm in Uniondale, Indiana. The plane caught fire in the passenger compartment and Hatch's father helped him evacuate the plane. Stephen Hatch suffered severe burns while trying to save other members of the family, as well; Austin's mother, sister and brother died in the incident.
2011
On June 24, 2011, nine days after making his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines, he boarded another plane his father piloted to their cabin; the duo were with Austin's stepmother, Kimberly Neal.
After leaving at 5:30 pm, bad weather forced Dr. Hatch to divert to an airport in Charlevoix, Michigan; he was cleared to land at around 7:20 pm. [1]
Attempting to land, coming from the wrong side of the runway, the plane crashed north of the airfield; Austin was the only passenger to survive the crash, as Stephen and Kim did not survive.
Hatch had suffered brain trauma, fractured ribs, a fractured sternum, a fractured hip, two broken collarbones, and holes in his lung. He was also in a six-week-long induced coma. He had to relearn how to walk and talk. In July 2011, his condition had stabilized but remained unresponsive.

They talked quietly throughout class, and he asked for her number.
