Atentat (Povratak otpisanih)

Atentat ("The Assassination" in English) is the fifth episode of the drama television series Povratak otpisanih, originally aired on Yugoslav Radiotelevision network (JRT) on January 29th, 1978. The plot deals with a Belgrade resistance attempt to assassinate a Wehrmacht general.

Plot

In the cold opening German general Meissner is being driven to an officers' ball in Belgrade. His car gets ambushed by three resistance members, but the General barely survives, mostly thanks to his aide, Major Rudi Hessler. General comes to the ball infuriated and demands that it ceases immediately, after which Gestapo Colonel Müller tells Major Krieger that he believed that the Wehrmacht General should have better nerves.

The assassination was carried out by a strike team of youths picked by Prle.

Its failure is the reason why he is criticised by Joca, but he promises that he would be more successful next time.

A flashback scene reveals that General Meissner ordered the massacre of the village of Vrbove.

One of the few survivors is villager named Ljubiša, who has sworn to avenge his family.

He arrives to Belgrade and finds the spot in ruined building from where he would try to kill the general with his rifle.

Caki, one of the members of Prle's group, sees his mother greet wife of Steva, drink-loving commisary sergeant of Serbian State Guard. Steva has beaten his wife because he lacks alcohol and Caki has an idea to exchange some of the liquor for grenades in his warehouse; his cover story is that grenades are used by fishermen in Danube as the easiest way to catch fish. Caki visits Steva and he reluctantly agrees with his scheme.

Ljubiša visits Mikula, Belgrade Special Police agent who happens to be is brother.

He tells him about family being massacred and his intention to kill general.

Mikula is torn between loyalty to the brother and his service.

He confides in Isa, one of the senior agents, who promises that he would try to spare his brother.

Isa informs Special Police who organise raid, but also pass information to Germans.

Meissner, who was forced to remain in his headquarters because of the assassin, orders Hassler to personally deal with him.

Mikula comes to the site, desperately trying to save brother, but he is shot by Hassler's soldiers.

Hassler manages to mortally wound Ljubiša with a grenade, but he is killed by dying man's shot.

In the meantime, Caki is taken away being betrayed by Steva.

He is beaten during interrogation, but sticks to his story about bombs being used only for fishing, Krsta Mišić believes him and refuses to hand him over to Gestapo.

General Meissner has suffered a nervous breakdwon and is been recalled to Berlin.

Prle and his men, including Caki, decide to send him farewell gift by droping grenades on his train, making him lose last traces of sanity.

After that Prle and his young comrades successfully escape to woods.
