Early Life and Education
Norris grew up in California and attended UCLA. She graduated in 2000 with a degree in International relations and American literature. In 2007, she earned her Master's in National Security and Strategic Studies form the US Naval War College.
Career
For nine years, Norris worked for California Senator Barbara Boxer as her Senior Foreign Policy and Defense Advisor. She handled all issues relating to Senator Boxer’s responsibilities as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and her chairmanship of the Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations, Human Rights, Democracy, and Global Women’s Issues. [1] Also at one point, Norris also worked as a Military Legislative Assistant to Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. [1] In 2014, she became Senior Advisor for Global Women’s Issues at the State Department during the Obama Administration. Norris during that time was Counselor to the United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, Catherine M. Russell, and focused on the empowerment of adolescent girls, gender-based violence, and gender issues in the Asia-Pacific region. [1] Two years later, Norris changed positions in the State Department and took the role of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Legislative Affairs.
Personal Life
Ann is married to Barack Obama's foreign policy speechwriter Ben Rhodes. The couple lives in Washington D.C. and have a daughter named Ella.
