Amy started her career in 1998 in the Education Department of Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. From 2005 to 2007, she worked at D. E. Shaw & Co. Later, she worked as an Adjunct professor at Williams College, Rhode Island School of Design, California College of the Arts, Sotheby's Institute of Art and School of Visual Arts.
Since 2016, Whitaker has been an Assistant Professor at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
She is the author of Art Thinking, Museum Legs, Economics of Visual Art (2020).
In 1996 Amy received a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College. She also obtained a Master of Fine Arts from University College London and a Master of Business Administration from Yale School of Management.
