Amera Abu-Hakmeh was a student at Chesterton High School. [1]
Life & Activities
Amera was a senior at CHS and an active member of the school’s band program.
She was an honor roll student and a member of the CHS Trojan Guard.
She was also a recipient of the Don Quijote Scholarship Fund, allowing for international travel, in 2016.
Death
On October 24, 2017, Abu-Hakmeh was killed in a car crash early in the morning on U.S. 20. The crash happened at 7:04 a.m. local time about 500 feet east of Clem Road.
A 2012 gold Buick Regal driven by Gayle Brown, 85, of Greencastle, Indiana, was traveling westbound in the inside lane of traffic.
Amera was driving a 2002 silver Mitsubishi Eclipse with her younger sister eastbound in the inside lane of travel.
Brown drove left of center striking the car with Amera and her sister.
Brown and Abuhakmeh died at the scene.
Abuhakmeh's sister, was transported to Comers Children's Hospital in Chicago.
She is in critical, but stable, condition.
