Shooting of Botham Shem Jean
On Saturday September 8, 2018, Guyger was returning home from a 13-and-a-half hour shift and was off duty but still in uniform when she shot Botham Shem Jean, a black Saint Lucia native who worked as an accountant. Guyger parked on what she believed to be the third floor of her apartment building's garage, but she had actually parked on the building's fourth floor, where Jean lived directly above her. Jean was sitting on his couch and eating ice cream when Guyger found the door ajar and opened fire. [2]
Legal proceedings
Guyger testified that, after working long hours that day, she returned to her Dallas apartment complex and approached what she thought was her apartment; it turned out to be the apartment directly above hers, whcih belonged to Jean.
She noticed the door was partially open, which was when she pulled out her service weapon and shot someone inside the aprtment who she claimed she thought was an intruder.[5]
