Al Lavender was a certified and licensed pilot and also the former Mayor and city councilor of Newburyport in Essex County, Massachusetts.
Background
Al was born and raised for much of his life in the state of Massachusetts.
He is remembered as a kind and adventurous person who loved being on his boat.
He also enjoyed flying planes.
Throughout the city he is known for motivating people to pursuit their dreams and helping members in government office as a consultant for any projects they may need assistance on.
Lavender was also on the executive board of the Newburyport Public Library.
Mayor
After much of his entrepreneurial pursuits throughout his life, he ran for office in the city of Newburyport. He was first a city councilor, and later on went on to become the mayor, serving for two years: 2000-2002. [1]
Plane Crash

On Tuesday afternoon, February 28th, 2017, Mr. Lavender was flying his plane, a single-engine Sonex Aircraft model, and was approaching his destination - the Lawrence Municipal Airport, when a malfunction occurred. According to testimonies, the plane took a nosedive straight down towards Riverview Blvd near the Merrimack River. The former mayor crashed into a multi-condo building - he was instantly killed in the crash. [3]
No one else was hurt or injured in the crash.
In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot was attempting to land the plane when it went down.
They have also reported that Skies were partly cloudy with calm winds and a 10-mile visibility at the time of the crash.
