Afek Zard was introduced to cryptocurrency by his roommate Alexei Yaromenko, an early investor in crypto since 2013. When Alexei wasn't home Zard gained access to his computer and sent a large amount of cryptocurrency to four of his own wallets. It's unknown whether there were any accomplices. He was indicted in Israel on April 18th and is accused of theft in aggravated circumstances, money laundering and penetration of a computer to commit an offense.
It was reported that Yarmolenko taught Zard about cryptocurrencies trading and was trading himself before the theft allegedly took place.
Per the indictment recorded document filed by attorney Giora Hazan, Zard was said to be in possession of a key to Yaromenko’s apartment and had access to the residence in Yaromenko’s absence.
