Adenike Ogunlesi is an established Entrepreneur in Nigeria and West Africa.She is also the Chief Executive Officer of popular clothing brand Ruff 'n' Tumble (clothing) with has outlets across West Africa.
Personal
Adenike Ogunlesi was born on the 14th of July in the year 1959 to a Nigerian Father and a Scottish mother. She had her days growing up among a Polygamous family in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. Her father was a Physician and her mother was a fashion expert.
Education
Adenike attended both primary and secondary school for elementary education in Ibadan, Oyo State. She later moved to Zaria where she attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in pursuit of a first degree in Law. In her second year in school there was a switch as she opted-out of school after realizing that law was not for her. Leaving school Adenike joined her mother’s train of tailoring in the fashion world. Later on in year 2000, she went to Lagos Business School where she acquires executive training skills from the courses offered there. [12]
Relationship
She is happily married to Adegbola Ogunlesi, who is an industrialist in the beauty industry.
The couple is blessed three children.
One of her Children is a record producer by the name Adey Ogunlesi. [13]
Entrepreneurship Journey
After leaving school and abandoning her education pursuit she joined her mother Elizabeth Okuboyejo who was a fashion designer and was in charge of Betti O, a setup that had expertise in producing local fabric called Adire. Finding passion in what she was doing Nike continued as new designs and patterns of tye and dye where introduced, she remained with her mother until she had to leave when she got married. Getting married came with its own responsibilities and sacrifices as she had to become a house wife giving ultimate care to her kids. [11]
Ruff n Tumble
Her tailoring skills were called back into action when she needed to get Pajamas for her children and she was unable to get.In a bid to solve this,she improvised by making pyjamas for them ,this was loved and appreciated by her relatives and other members of the family ,but would also be a foundation for the next big thing to happen in the west African fashion world. “My kids ran out of pajamas.
And I used to make clothing for women.
So I decided that I’d just make some pajamas for my kids.
”
She started out selling to family and friends and never intended rigorous commercial activities but a look at the Nigerian local market would lead her otherwise. Ruff 'n' Tumble (clothing) was birthed in 1996 ,selling at Bazaars, from her car boot ,local market places ,the fashion outlet climbed up the ladder first to GRA Ikeja in year 2000 and has now grown into an easily recognizable international brand ,the choice of customers in Nigeria. Ruff n Tumble currently has a warehouse and several distribution outlets spread across cities in Nigeria( Lagos, Ilorin, Ibadan, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt) and in West Africa.[15]
Other Activities
Other than her Fashion brand ,she has other engagements as follows;
• she was appointed on the 11th of March, 2015 as a non-executive Director at Lafarge Africa PLC.
• She is a member of the advisory board at Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) at Lagos Business School.
• She was the first president as well as a founding member of the Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW) at the Nigeria Employer’s Consultative Association (NECA).
