Career
Officer Aaron Torgalski was among 19 new recruits sworn in by Mayor Byron Brown and Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda in an afternoon ceremony on August 1, 2014. The recruits undertook a six-month training program at the Police Academy and graduated in January 2015.[8]
Viral video
On June 4, 2020, a video uploaded on Twitter which allegedly shows Aaron Torgalski pushing an elderly man causing him to fall backwards and start bleeding from ear was shared widely among users. [1] The viral video viewed more than 17 million times also shows other Buffalo, New York police officers shove the 75 year old man to the ground and then walk by him as he lies, bleeding from the head, on the pavement. [1]
The incident occurred shortly after Buffalo’s curfew went into effect. On Twitter, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Buffalo’s Mayor Byron Brown both released statements about the incident.
“This incident is wholly unjustified and utterly disgraceful,” Cuomo wrote.
“I’ve spoken with Buffalo @MayorByronBrown and we agree that the officers involved should be immediately suspended pending a formal investigation.
Police Officers must enforce — NOT ABUSE — the law.”
Aftermath
Fifty-seven police officers in Buffalo, New York, have resigned from the force's emergency response team following the suspension of Aaron Torgalski and another officer.
The protestor involved in the viral video was identified as longtime peace activist Martin Gugino. [15]
Charges
On June 6, 2020, Officers Robert McCabe (Police Officer) and Aaron Torgalski were charged with second-degree assault during a virtual arraignment. [17]
