Tanjim Ashraful Haque, born in May 23, 1974, is a Bangladeshi born Fashion Entrepreneur and business executive best known for his retail store Ecstasy Limited and his own clothing line Tanjim in Bangladesh.
Tanjim Haque’s educational path started out in an uneven manner.
Coming from a stern family background and being bought up in a developing country Tanjim had to fulfill his parents’ wishes by enrolling into medical school.
However, that path was short lived only because Tanjim had dreams of his own and thus went against his parents aspirations and dropped out of medical school and did diploma courses on and off in fashion and merchandising.
Tanjim had high aspirations for fashion from the time he used to be in a government laboratory high school.
Oftentimes during his recess he used to go window shopping and ponder upon his favorite fashion brands at the time.
Being a fervent tennis player, his iconic brands where none other than Nike and Adidas. Not being able to frequently purchase these items and having to wait for relatives to come from abroad and bring it for him, he started scouting around for the brands here in Bangladesh. Upon finding them he was elated and even more awed to know that these brands where manufactured here in his home country. Doing some research he discovered that Bangladesh was in fact producing a lot of foreign garments like Ralph Lauren and GAP for export businesses.
He met his girlfriend, Asma Sultana who is now his wife, in college and they even begun going to medical school together.
Of course, he was in need of pocket money so he thought of developing his first screen printed T-shirt for Bangladesh Medical College, approximately 100 pieces with the tag line provided by his elder brother ‘Tough Times Never Last But Tough Guys Do’. Seeing what a big knockout it was, exuberant Tanjim went on to produce another design which too was a success for him.
Tanjim and his girlfriend then thought of investing their savings into the stock market in order to generate more money for the lifestyle that they began having.
Little knowing that the stock market was a pond of big sharks they miserably lost most of their investments.
Tanjim knowing his father very well would not dare to ask him for financial assistance and thus turned to his elder brother for help so that they could start a retail business together.
Being influenced by rock culture and westernized media, Tanjim used to be knee deep in music that he came across the word Ecstasy Limited from a music video featured in MTV at the time.
That word took him by storm that he was adamant to coin that as the name of his brand.
Initially his retail business took part in fairs like WVA and received tremendous popularity.
However, when asked about a positioned store he was not able to address that as he did not have a store at the time.
So he took another leap and decided to convert a 120 square foot garage into his retail store.
It was then that Tanjim, his girlfriend and his elder brother bought together the escapade of Ecstasy.
Back then in the year 1997 Ecstasy Limited was a bold step into the conservative society.
It begun to set trends and attune to the point that the younger generation merged into it like a symbiotic entity.
Tanjim had always wanted Ecstasy Limited to be his signature brand, but due to financial inability at the time was not able to perpetrate it.
Since he could not establish it as a brand he started selling different brands, especially export leftovers, in his fashion house.
Subsequently, most of his export leftovers were multifarious.
There were issues regarding size and measurement which compelled Tanjim to develop some lines within Ecstasy Limited and hence begun to grow his chain store.
Tanjim however was not a man to remain stagnant.
He wanted to cement himself in way that he will be able to have a glorified moment like his fashion inspirations Ralph Lauren and such.
He wanted to take up the challenge and create his own label named ‘Tanjim’ and he did.
He first started with graphic and printed T-shirts, gradually moved on to casual shirts and then finally denims, which were his one true fashion love.
After several experimentation Tanjim finally decided that his denims were most treasured fashion item.
Currently Tanjim has 28 stores nationwide in Bangladesh and his brand Tanjim produces a variety of styles and washes implementing innovative detailing and intricate craftsmanship into his products.
Tanjim also still has his T-shirts, casual shirts and leather goods such as shoes, wallets and bags in his fashion line which is frequently updated season wise.
