Intro
Superbalist.com is an online fashion retailer primarily aimed at South African 20-somethings.
Local and international products are sourced to offer a broad mix of international brands and affordable fashion, suited to the budget and aesthetics of millennial South Africans.
The brand offering includes Cotton On, adidas Originals, New Balance, Nike, Vero Moda, Jack & Jones, Vans, Casio, G-Star RAW, Missguided, Glamorous and more, catering for women, men, kids and home.
History and Company Beginnings
Founded in November 2010 as CityMob, the company rebranded three years later in 2013 to become Superbalist.com.
Most recently, Superbalist was officially acquired by Takealot in August 2015, the largest online retailer in South Africa.
According to a statement issued by Takealot, the buyout was aimed at broadening its appeal to young South Africans who shop online.
Superbalist continues to operate as an independent division.
Awards
Superbalist had the honour of being the most-awarded brand at the 2016 Bookmark Awards, receiving Gold awards for Best App and Best Editorial, Silver for Specialist Publisher site, UX/UI Design, and News and Feature Writing, and also Bronze for General Website.
This showing made them the biggest winner for any brand working in-house, as well as the biggest winning e-commerce brand in the history of the awards.
They followed on their success at the 2017 edition of the Bookmarks with another five awards for Best Retail Website, Online Video Production, E-commerce Site, Microsite and Mobile App.
On top of that, 2017 saw Superbalist win their first three Loeries, namely for The Dakar Express campaign, as well as Best Niche Shopping Experience at the Tech & E-commerce Awards.
The Way of Us
South Africa's award-winning blog publishes daily fashion and lifestyle content that speaks to the brand’s millennial customers.
The original stories found here focus on individual style, cool people doing cool things and life in post-democratic South Africa.
The Way of Us is part of Superbalist's youth-focused content marketing strategy that aligns with the business strategy, which is about earning trust, one connection at a time.
The content platform does this by celebrating the always on, highly curious, style-savvy young people who are making lives for themselves in modern South Africa.
The blog’s first print issue, a 64-page magazine, went out with 3000 orders in December 2016, with winner of the Superbalist 100 that year, Buhle Ngaba, as the cover star.
A second issue, featuring Nonku Phiri on the cover, was released in May.
Superbalist is Rocking the Daisies
2016 saw Superbalist’s first foray into the world of events, collaborating with the renowned Cape Town music festival, Rocking the Daisies.
From the partnership came Superbalist is Rocking the Daisies and Superbalist In the City, the latter being the sister festival that takes place in Johannesburg.
With each, Superbalist worked with the festivals to offer unique fashion-themed activations and online marketing to ensure 2016 was the festival’s biggest year yet.
Superbalist100 campaign
Starting in 2015, Superbalist formed a list featuring the who’s who of young talent.
The list includes people from all industries, including a social and environmental activist, a milliner, a theatre director, entrepreneurs and more.
The campaign runs every year with the aim of finding new creatives to spotlight.
YouTuber Suzelle DIY took the number 1 spot in the Superbalist100 campaign in 2015.
Author of The Girl Without A Sound and founder of KaMatla NPO Buhle Ngaba took the honours in 2016.
