Education and early career
She was born in Munich, Germany and grew up in Somerdale, New Jersey. She graduated from San Diego State University, where she had been the first African-American woman elected to a major position in student government. She decided to become a Republican after hearing Jack Kemp speak on her college campus. [2] She studied law after attaining her undergrad degree, and originally wanted to be the first black female Supreme Court Justice. She was a legal counsel to New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman [2] [4] and ran for Congress from New Jersey's 1st congressional district in 1996. [4] She was also a GOP counsel for the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, [2] but ultimately decided to leave politics, and has since decided to leave the party.
Freelance writer
Nelson writes a national lifestyle and political column for NBC's theGrio.com titled "Living Redefined", and she is a contributor to Essence magazine, Heart & Soul , USA Today and NPR. Her second book Reconnect was published 2013 and it deals with the power of human "connection" and how to focus on what truly matters in the 21st Century.
She authored the book Black Woman Redefined: Dispelling Myths and Discovering Fulfillment in the Age of Michelle Obama.
She advocates for better representation of black women in the media and society. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
