Sayyid Pathiya Maliyekkal Sayeed Ahmed AlHussainy Pookoya Thangal (Malayalam : സയ്യിദ് പി എം എസ് എ പൂക്കോയ തങ്ങള് , Arabic : سيّد بي.يم.يس.يا.بوكوي ‎‎), was a Muslim spiritual leader hailing from Kerala, [1] veteran leader of Indian Union Muslim League (I.U.M.L) [2] and respected member of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama. He is 39th grandson of the Islamic prophet, Muhammed, and his lineage goes to the house ‘’BA'ALAWI’’ from Yemen

Early life

Sayyid P.M.S.A Pookoya is the son of Sayyid Pathiya Maliyekkal Sayeed Muhammed AlHussaini Pookoya Thangal from his wife Sayyida Ummulhani and allegedly the 39th grandson of Prophet Muhammed. His full name is Sayyid Pathiya Maliyekkal Sayeed Ahmed AlHussaini Pookoya Thangal. His uncle Sayyid Pathiya Malayekkil Ali AlHussaini Pookoya Thangal brought him up in his younger age after the demise of his father. Sayyid Ali possessed good piety and was famous Ayurvedic doctor of that locality. So the young Pookoya gathered the fetched the skill in the treatment. His family settled in a house later became famous and so called the Kodappanakkal Tharavad.

In Malabar revolution of 1921, many Mappilas were brutally arrested and attacked.

Seeing this bestial deeds of cruel British he prayed the almighty to never see such cruelty in his life and later he became blind and known as eyeless Thangal Uppapa.

In 1932 Sayyid Ali died and he survived none so he offered all legacy including the Kodappanakkal Tharavad for his foster son, Sayyid Pookoya, then 19 years old.

In this time Sayyid Pookoya settled in Kodappanakkal Tharavad and later it became more popular after his settlement.

Sayyid Pookoya added Ali after the names of his five children in order to pay the gratitude to his father.

Educational career

Sayyid Pookoya’s primary religious education was carried under his foster father Sayyid Ali Pookoya.

His primary education was from Panakkad school.

In very childhood he attracted his teacher by his excellent performance in daily studies.

He also studied from the Dars in Panakkad and also build good reputation among his colleague and his teachers.

Family life

Sayyid P.M.S.A Pookoya married firstly Ayisha Cherakunhi Beevi, the daughter of Sayyid Hamid Shihabudden Kunchikooya from Pazhamallur Sayyid Shihab’s family.

He has six children in this matrimonial relation : Late Sayyid Muhammed Ali Shihab, Sayyid Hyder Ali Shihab, Late Sayyid Umarali Shihab, Sayyidath Khadeeja beevi and Sayyidath Shareefa Mulla beevi. After the demise of his first life partner, he tied the knot Sayyidath Khadeeja Embichi beevi from Pazhaya Maliyekkal Nahri family calicut. He has three children in this relation : Sayyid Sadique Ali Shihab and Sayyid Abbas Ali Shihab and Late Sayyid Siddiq Ali Shihab Thangal.

Ideal life style of Thangal

Sayyid Pookoya’s personality and his ideal life were amazing and role model to everyone.

Many religious, political, social and cultural leaders have admired Pookoya Thangal’s life and they have written about Thangal with their open hearts in chandrika magazine publish after his demise.

He always followed the systematic life of punctuality and arrangement.

He preferred to wear white clothes and used to wear black Turkey made cap and half shoes.

He never liked to trouble others even in his last moment of time.

He was very keen in religious affairs and gave it more priority throughout his life.

Shamsul Ulama, prominent sunni leader said about him:” Panakkad Thangal brought up his son in Islamic ways and compelled them to serve the public “. Even non Muslims also admired in his charismatic life style and many of them remembered his lifestyle in their condolence.

The entry of Thangal in politics

Pookoya Thangal made his debut in political career by membership in Indian National Congress.

Muhammed Abdul Rahman Sahib and E. Moidu Moulavi were main co-activists during his early period in political career.

Sayyid Pookoya took a membership in Congress in 1937 and chased the national service done by the legends of congress.

In the Madras legislative assembly election of 1937, Abdul Rahman Sahib won with massive majority by the election campaign under the Pookoya Thangal.

Sayyid Pookoya and Indian Union Muslim League

Muslim league came to existence under the leadership of Q aeda Millaht in independent Indiaat leagud council meeting held at RTaji hall In Madras on 10 March 1948.

Pookoya Thangal entered in Malabar, Muslim league, the branch of Indian Union Muslim league.

He was accompanied with close relatives in this new political party like Qaeda Qaum Sayyid Bafaqi and Haji Abdul Sathar Settu.

He was later elected as president of Eranad Thaluk and in 1948 as chairman of Malabar district Muslim League.

His arrival in the I.U.M.L helped the organization to popularize in very short period.

Sayyid Pookoya and Malappuram

Advocate Alanged Abdul Majeed, who was the Muslim league MLA won in election of 1959 from Monakada territory, was first person who wanted the establishment of Malappuram district in legislative assembly of Kerala. Later 1967 ahemd kurukkal moved heaven and earth for the foramation of malappuram district. He elaborated the neccistiy of malappuram district with the detaild in his speech in Muslim league conference in Managara, Calicut in 1968. Sayyid Pookoya also elaborated the necessity of Malappuram district in this conference. In June 16 of 1969 Malappuram district was established and Sayyid Pookoya was elected as the first president of Malappuram district committee of IUML. Followers gave him red carpet welcome for newly elected president and obeyed him in all activities.

As the state president of India Union Muslim League

Following of establishment of Kerala state on 1 November 1956, IUML held representatives meeting on 18 November at Eranakulam.

Bafaqi Thangal was elected as president of state level and meanwhile K.M Seethi Sahib as the general secretary.

After service of long period (1956–1973) as the president, Sayyid Bafaqi left the mortal world.

The blank erupted after the demise of Bafaqi Thangal was filled by P.M.S.A Pookoya Thangal.

P.M.S.A Pookoya Thangal and Samastha

Samastha kerala jameyyathul ulama, the organization of Muslims clerics in Kerala, held its conference after in January 29, 30 of 1959 and P.M.S.A Pookoya Thangal inaugurated the function. In another conference held in February 7,8,9 – 1961, he was active as the president of organizing committee. In 1966 April 3, another conference was held and he proclaimed in that function “Here is only one Samastha and there is no need for another organization. People from various background consulted him for the solution of their share related problems.

Religious institution under his auspicious leadership

There were many institution constructed under his leadership.

Death

The last political conference which he participated was on 4/7/1975 and religious conference was in Ullal Sayyid Arabic College on 25/4/1975.

He fell ill during a trip to Bangalore on April 27. In July his condition deteriorated. He died on 6 July 1975 (Hijra- 1395 Jumadul Akhir 25) [5]
