Life and career
Born in Karachi, Pakistan to Goan parents Eulogio and Maura, she is the youngest of six children. She moved to Canada with her family at the age of one, settling in Toronto.
She is a graduate of Carleton University's Journalism program and began her career in television at CTV answering phone calls. She then moved on to writing for CTV News and Canada AM before moving to Citytv in 1998 where she began working as a writer. Soon after, she became a reporter and anchored City News' weekend newscasts alongside Francis D'Souza. She was then moved to CityNews at Five, weekdays at 5:00pm alongside Dwight Drummond.
On January 19, 2010, CITY-TV announced cuts to several news programs and staff.
The 5 pm news was cancelled, and Merella Fernandez was part of a company-wide layoff that affected 6% of CITY's staff, including several on-air personalities.
As of April 2011, Merella returned to CTV as news correspondent with CTV News Channel in Toronto.
