Love and Death in Bali (German: Liebe und Tod auf Bali) is a 1937 novel by the Austrian writer Vicki Baum. It is set during the 1906 Dutch intervention in Bali. Baum had recently stayed in Bali with her friend Walter Spies who supplied her with background for the novel. It is also known by the title A Tale from Bali.[2]
Summary
Set against the backdrop of the Dutch invasion of Bali in 1906, the novel tells the story of the peasant Pak and his family and friends, and the tragedy that is their shared fate.
Passionate yet peaceful and deeply spiritual people, the Balinese defy the Dutch imperial forces through an act that would bring them certain death.
They looting a Chinese trading ship and this gives the Dutch colonial forces the perfect excuse to intervene in the island's affairs.
Their intervention, however, is met with brutal resistance.
In the ensuing battle of Badung, wave upon wave of Balinese clothed in white ceremonial garb charge into the firing Dutch guns, kris daggers in hand, prepared to die.
