John Patrick Acquaviva (born 1993) is a football freestyler, political activist, photographer and public speaker.

He is the 3 time Venezuelan national freestyle champion, Colombian Sub champion, 5th in UK and 10th in the world.

Biography

John Patrick Acquaviva was born in Maracaibo, and grew up in Mérida. He started playing football at the age of 5 and was signed to a professional team, Union Atletico Maracaibo at 13, he suffered a knee injury at 14 which ended his football career. During this time Acquaviva began training freestyle up to 5 hours a day, after three months of training he went on to compete and win in the Red Bull street style 2008 in Caracas, this marked the beginning of his career in freestyle football and as a public figure in general.

After retiring from freestyle in 2013 due to a back injury he became increasingly involved in politics and political activism, initially only in Venezuelan politics but later on he moved to western politics and began creating content for English speaking audiences as well as Spanish.

Freestyle Career

In 2009 Acquaviva won for a second time the Venezuelan national freestyle competition and ended 2nd in the Colombian red bull street style 2009 and got sponsored by Adidas becoming the first freestyler to ever be sponsored by a major sports brand.

In 2010 he won for a third time the Venezuelan national freestyle competition, starred in Powerade's "Keep playing" campaign for South Africa 2010, filmed and directed by academy award winner Claudio Miranda, also in 2010 he inaugurated the first ever football freestyle academy in Latin America, based in his home town of Maracaibo.

In 2011 he competed in the Prague superball world championship and got to the semi finals were he would be defeated by Szymo, who would then go on to win the championship,.

In 2012 Acquaviva was nominated to carry the London 2012 Olympic torch in Euxton, Lancashire, he was the first Freestyler to ever be involved with the Olympics and carried the torch on the 22nd of June.

In 2013 he suffered a back injury during training which ended his competitive career.

In 2014 after nearly a year without training he decided to compete in the UK & Ireland championships held in Manchester, he ended in 5th place overall.

Retirement

After retiring from freestyle in 2013 Acquaviva became an ambassador for The Dame kelly holmes legacy trust and UK Sporting Champions, for whom he gave motivational speeches and freestyle workshops for 4 years until he decided to leave the organisations due to a "difference of opinions".

He is a photographer and film maker and has had several of his street photography shots published by media outlets in Latin America and in 2015 he founded a marketing and web development business based in Manchester.

Politics and controversy

In 2014 John was added to the "Cyber terrorism" watch list created by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro due to his commentary against the government during the 2014–16 Venezuelan protests this led to him having to leave Venezuela and he has not been able to return since.
