Early life

Gershon was born in Los Angeles, to Mickey Gershon (née Koppel),[1] an interior decorator, and Stan Gershon, who worked in the import-export business and sales.[2][3] Gershon was raised in a Jewish family in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley.[4] She has an older brother and an older sister.

Gershon went to Collier Street Elementary School and Woodland Hills Academy (formerly known as Parkman Junior High).[5] She attended Beverly Hills High School and started acting at the age of 14. After graduating from high school in 1980, Gershon moved to Boston to attend Emerson College. She transferred to New York University, and graduated with a BFA in drama and psychology/philosophy in 1983.[6]

Gershon said she always wanted to be an actress, but her career began in music and dance.[5]

Career

Theatre

Gershon attended the Circle in the Square Professional Theater School in New York, working first with David Mamet and later with Harold Guskin and Sandra Seacat, whom she has described in interviews as "a huge influence."[7][8][9] Gershon is one of the founding members of the New York-based theater group Naked Angels.[10]

She has appeared on Broadway three times: as Sally Bowles in the revival of Cabaret; in the revival of the sex farce Boeing-Boeing; and as Rosie Alvarez in the 2010 revival of Bye Bye Birdie at the Roundabout Theatre Company.[11]

Her first acting venues were stage appearances in Camille and The Substance of Fire.

Film

Her break came with a bit part in Pretty in Pink (1986), which led to more substantial roles in Sweet Revenge with Nancy Allen and Cocktail with Tom Cruise and Elisabeth Shue and in John Sayles' urban drama City of Hope (1991). Gershon also worked in television, with a recurring role on Melrose Place playing a prostitute working for a Heidi Fleiss-esque Hollywood madam.

In 1996 she played Corky, an ex-con who gets mixed up in an affair with Violet (played by Jennifer Tilly), in the mobster flick Bound.[12] In 1997, she co-starred with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in Face/Off.[10]

Gershon is regarded as a gay icon[13] for her roles in movies such as Bound (in which she played a butch lesbian), Prey for Rock & Roll, and Showgirls (in which she played a bisexual stripper, and which is regarded as a camp classic). She was ranked #23 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2004.[14]

In 2011, Gershon appeared alongside Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe, a dark comedy/thriller featuring director William Friedkin.[15]

In 2017, Gershon co-starred alongside Nicolas Cage in Inconceivable, an American thriller film directed by Jonathan Baker, written by Chloe King and released by Lionsgate Premiere.[16]

In June 2019, Variety magazine confirmed that the casting of Allen's new and currently Untitled film in San Sebastian, Spain would include "Gina Gershon as well as production company Gravier Productions."[17]

TV and online work

She portrayed Nancy Sinatra in the made-for-TV biopic Sinatra, in 1992.

On television, she has recurring roles on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm (as a Hasidic dry cleaner), Rescue Me, and the U.S. dramedy series Ugly Betty (as Italian cosmetics mogul Fabia, the rival of Wilhelmina Slater). She also has served as the voiceover for Major League Baseball's "I Live For This" promotional campaign. She has also voiced Catwoman in the 2007 animated series The Batman.

On September 10, 2008, Gershon appeared in a video on funnyordie.com, parodying former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, titled "Gina Gershon Strips Down Sarah Palin"[18] which she followed with "Gina Gershon Does Sarah Palin 2".[19]

In 2011, she appeared as a recurring character in the HBO series How to Make It in America.[20] Her portrayal of Donatella Versace in Lifetime's House of Versace earned her praise from fashion critic Cathy Horyn.[21]

On December 19, 2014, it was announced that Gershon would guest star in Glee's sixth and final season as Pam, the mother of Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss).[22]

In 2017, Gershon had a recurring role on Brooklyn Nine-Nine as the villainous Lt. Melanie Hawkins. On October 7, 2018, it was announced that Gershon would appear on the CW drama series Riverdale playing Jughead Jones' mother Gladys who is a shady businesswoman.[23]

Music

Gershon played Jew's harp on "I Can't Decide", a song on the Scissor Sisters 2006 release Ta-Dah. She also played Jew's harp on the song "I Do It For Your Love", Paul Simon's collaboration with Herbie Hancock on his album Possibilities, in a duo with bassist Christian McBride on the song "Chitlins and Gefiltefish", on McBride's 2011 album Conversations with Christian, and on "Maria" from her album In Search of Cleo.[24][25]

She had a cameo role in The Cars 1984 video "Hello Again" alongside Andy Warhol. She appeared in Lenny Kravitz's music video entitled "Again".

Books

She and her brother Dan are the authors of the children's book Camp Creepy Time.[26]

Gershon's first book written for adults, In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind, is the true story of the hunt for her runaway cat[27] and was released on October 11, 2012.[28]

Personal life

In 2015, Gershon dated Bobby Dekeyser, a Belgian Football player turned furniture designer.[29] According to a January 29, 2018, Page Six interview with Gershon, they were no longer in a relationship.
