Life and career
1994–2014: Early life and career beginnings
Dinmukhamed Kanatuly Kudaibergen was born on May 24, 1994, in Aktobe, Kazakhstan, to singers Kanat Aitbayev and Svetlana Aitbayeva.
Although Dinmukhamed is his official name, he has always been called by his nickname of Dimash, both at home and in public.
[118] His father Kanat Aitbayev previously led the regional Cultural Development Board of Aktobe.
[141] His mother Svetlana Aitbayeva is a soprano singer at the Aktobe Philharmonic Society, [146] [15] a Member of the Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Development (Deputy of Maslikhat of Aktobe region) and Artistic Director of the children's studio Saz in the Aktobe region. [44] Both of Kudaibergen’s parents have been awarded the title of Honored Music Artists by the government of Kazakhstan. [91] Kudaibergen has a younger sister, Raushan, and a younger brother, Abilmansur (Mansur).
Kudaibergen was brought up in a close-knit musical family, and his grandparents, who lived together with him and his parents, played a major role in his upbringing, following a traditional Kazakh custom.
[60] [15] [146] His grandmother, Miua Nizamutdinova, is a retired teacher of Geography and Biology, and also sang when she was younger. [78] His grandfather, Kudaibergen Aitbayev, is a dombra player. [0] Kudaibergen’s parents emphasized the importance of speaking the Kazakh language well and of playing traditional musical instruments such as the dombra. [91] Growing up in this musical and cultural environment, he was fascinated with music from a young age. Kudaibergen’s parents regularly performed in concerts, and his grandparents took him to watch. His mother later recalled: "Dimash has always loved the stage. I remember [...] at the end of the performance before we thanked the audience, Dimash [would] run up from where he was sitting in the audience with his grandparents to the stage and be with us to bow and say thanks." [60]
Kudaibergen’s first appearance on the stage as a performer was at the age of two in a minor role in a local theatre production.
At home Kudaibergen took an interest in musical instruments, and his parents noticed that he had absolute pitch.
[91] At the age of five, he began to take piano and vocal lessons at the children’s studio of Aktobe’s Zhubanov Music College (where he would later attend college), accompanied by his grandmother Miua.
[90] Kudaibergen first sang on stage the same year, at the age of five.
[43] He has expressed gratitude to his first teachers, and to his grandmother, who took him to his lessons daily despite her leg pain.
[105] At the age of six, in 2000, he won the national piano contest Aynalayin.
As a young child, Kudaibergen dreamed of singing on a large stage.
His childhood play and drawings were based on cassettes, microphones, stages, and himself singing on stage.
[15] [118] At the age of ten, he was the host at various local events. [43] At school his teachers noticed that he was self-driven; that he studied the works of great Kazakh poets and writers, making their verses into songs and singing them; wrote poetry himself, and arranged music. [15] Kudaibergen’s mother has recalled that he practiced hard to have a wide vocal range and never missed classes in the vocal studio even when he was injured. [105] She attributes his ability to hold his breath for long periods of time to regular swim training since childhood. [146]
From 2010 to 2013 Kudaibergen participated in several singing contests, winning four major competitions, in Kazakhstan (Sonorous Voices of Baikonur, 2010 and Zhas Kanat, 2012), Ukraine (Oriental Bazaar, 2012), and Kyrgyzstan (Makin Asia, 2013).
[43] [136] In 2013 he was invited to perform as a guest singer at the Türkçevizyon Gala Night in Denizli, Turkey. As a teenager Kudaibergen was also engaged in Taekwondo and swimming. During this time he composed the music for two of his future hit songs, "Körkemim" (Kazakh: Көркемім ), with the lyrics written by his father, and "Unforgettable Day", based on a poem by Oral Baisengir. Kudaibergen also recorded three music videos, two versions of "Körkemim" (2013, [2] 2014) and "Daididau" (Kazakh: Дайдидау, 2014).
In 2014 he graduated from Aktobe’s Zhubanov Music College, and began his studies in Astana at Kazakh National University of Arts in the faculty of "Pop Art".
[120] Kudaibergen continued to perform in public, including at a concert held for Teacher’s Day. His grandparents moved to Astana to support him with his performances. His grandmother said: "Dimash sings all songs live, without lip-syncing. We often have to squeeze his wet shirts, because he completely surrenders himself to every song on the stage. We moved to Astana to prepare his concert costumes, to cook his food in time." [146] On December 30, 2014, Kudaibergen was awarded a laureate of the State Youth Prize Daryn. [12] In 2015 he performed as a guest at a concert in Kyrgyzstan, at Zhas Kanat 2015, and at a concert for Astana Day.
2015–2016: Slavianski Bazaar, international performances and Unforgettable Day Tour
Since childhood Kudaibergen dreamed of winning the prestigious Slavianski Bazaar, an international contest for prominent singers, held in Vitebsk, Belarus each year. Kudaibergen went on to win the Grand Prix prize on July 13, 2015, with a score of 175 out of 180. [63] Over the three days of the contest, he was the clear favorite, impressing the jury and audience. [86] [94] [126] His unique voice and vocal range displayed in his original renditions of Kazakh folk song "Daididau", Russian singer Alla Pugacheva’s "Blizzard Again" (Russian: Опять Метель) and French singer Daniel Balavoine’s "SOS d'un terrien en détresse", received praise from the jury and media. [107] [126] Chairman of the jury, Polad Bülbüloğlu, stated that Kudaibergen possessed three voices in one: low and medium timbres, and altino, a rare voice, and that he used all of them professionally. [123]
After the event Kudaibergen stated that winning Slavianski Bazaar was a great honour, [130] and stressed the importance of supporting young singers, stating that without support, one cannot accomplish much with talent alone.

On June 27, 2017, Kudaibergen held his first large-scale solo concert in Astana in conjunction with EXPO 2017, naming it Bastau (Beginning).
Among the sold out crowd of around 30,000 spectators were fans from abroad.
Invited guest singers from abroad were Terry Lin, Kristina Orbakaitė (who sang "Opyat Metel" with Kudaibergen), Loreen, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and from Kazakhstan Maira Mukhamedkyzy (who sang "My Swan" with Kudaibergen), Marat Aitimov, and Kudaibergen’s parents Svetlana Aitbayeva and Kanat Aitbayev (who sang the closing song, "Astana Waltz" with Kudaibergen). [3] Kudaibergen sang for most of the duration of the 2.5 hour concert, wowing the audience with his strong voice and unique vocal range in songs such as "Day Break", "Diva Dance", "SOS d'un terrien en détresse", and "A Tribute to MJ". Bastau also received rave reviews in the media. He sang live to a live orchestra, and sang his popular songs from Singer days, as well as pre-Singer songs. He also debuted his new songs "My Star" (Kazakh: Жұлдызым ), "Without You" (Kazakh: Кім екен ), "My Last Words to You" (Kazakh: Сөз соңы ), and "Leyla" (Kazakh: Лейла ). [121] [138] [155] [20]
On July 11, Kudaibergen’s new song "Ocean over Time" (Chinese: 时光·沧海) was released in China as the theme song for the game Moonlight Blade. [17] It was announced that a passenger jet would advertise the game, bearing Kudaibergen’s image. Its first flight would be on August 22, between Shanghai and Beijing. [37] On July 17, Kudaibergen sang "Adagio" at the closing ceremony of Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk, Belarus, where his career had catapulted in 2015. [47] On July 19 and 20 he won two MTV awards in China, for "Most Popular Overseas Singer" in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, where he performed as well. [53] On July 22, he walked the red carpet and performed at the 2017 Eurasia Film Festival in Astana, Kazakhstan. He sang "All by Myself" and folk song "Dudarai" (Kazakh: Дударай ), impressing the likes of Nicolas Cage and Adrien Brody. [70] [76] More awards and performances followed: "Favorite Male Singer" at the Chinese Golden Melody Festival in Hong Kong, [80]"Astana Voice" at the Annual International Music Festival in Astana, Kazakhstan, [102] and "Best Overseas Male Star" at the New Asia Song Festival in Beijing. [115] Kudaibergen announced in his acceptance speech in Beijing that he had plans to hold solo concerts in China, and restated that his fans in China had proved that music has no boundaries.
On September 16, Kudaibergen performed as the headliner at the open air Gakku Festival concert in Almaty, to a crowd of 150,000 spectators.
Prior to this event, his highest recorded note was G#7 on the whistle register, on par with Mariah Carey. At Gakku Festival, he surpassed himself by hitting D8 during "Unforgettable Day". [135] [137] [104] One week later he sang a duet with Coco Lee at her concert in Hangzhou, China. On October 2, he performed as guest at 3rd Grand Charity Ball, in Uralsk (he had also participated in the 1st and 2nd Grand Charity Ball events in 2015 and 2016). [142] [151] [1] On October 17, Kudaibergen performed in Paris at a UNESCO concert, along with other famed artists from Kazakhstan. [11] He sang "Daididau" and "SOS d'un terrien en détresse", wearing his traditional shapan from Singer Episode 7. A few days earlier, also in France, Kudaibergen’s countryman, the figure skater Denis Ten had debuted his Olympic season free program to Kudaibergen’s rendition of "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" at the 2017 Cup of Nice. Kudaibergen performed "Memory" (from Cats) at *Tmall * 11.11 Countdown Gala in Shanghai, China. [18] Kudaibergen is currently working on recording his first album. [22]
