Dan "OGRE 1" Ryan

Dan "OGRE 1" Ryan

Dan Ryan (born August 3, 1986) is a retired professional Halo player. In January 2005, Ryan started his career as a professional Halo 2 gamer under the pseudonym Ogre 1. That same year, he and his twin brother, Tom Ryan (Ogre 2), won the gold in Halo 2 for the World Cyber Games.[1] In 2006, he returned with his team as a member of the Major League Gaming (MLG) four-on-four team Final Boss,[2] previously known as "Team 3D." In June, 2006, he signed a three-year contract with MLG worth 250,000 dollars. Ryan has been featured in Electronic Gaming Monthly[3] and BPM. He also made an appearance in all of the Boost Mobile MLG Pro Circuit episodes on USA Network in 2006.[4] His favorite game type is Oddball on the Halo 2 level Midship. Ryan grew up in Columbus, Ohio.

Gaming career

Dan Ryan began his professional gaming career playing at small local tournaments along with Tom Ryan, his twin brother. The two began to get involved with professional gaming after much success.[5] Since then, he has been a member of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 teams, some of which that have received media and gamer attention for finishing in the top of their tournaments and leagues. Some such teams include Team 3D's Halo 2 team,[6] Team StK, Team Domination, Final Boss. He and his brother also represented the United States in the Halo 2 competition at the 2005 World Cyber Games in Singapore, defeating the Canadian team to secure a first-place finish.[7] As part of Final Boss, he helped the team to win two consecutive Major League Gaming National Championships in 2004 and 2005,[8] before finishing the 2006 season by placing second to Team Carbon in a close 4–6 match.[9] Until the arrival of the 2008 season, Dan and Tom had not finished below 2nd place in a tournament. As the 2008 season started, it seemed as if Final Boss would pick up where they left off, winning MLG Meadowlands by defeating Team Classic. After placing dismally at the next two events, Final Boss dropped player Walshy to pick up another high-profile player from Str8 Rippin, Neighbor. Movement of players to different teams caused Final Boss to split their roster. Prior to the 2009 Pro Circuit, Ogre 1 was rumored to be retiring but was confirmed on the team roster of The Incredibles. Going into 2009, Ogre 2, the only original remaining member of Final Boss, had recreated his team alongside pro players Mackeo, Fearitself, and Victory X. After Meadowlands 2009, Ogre 1 officially retired from competitive gaming. Although he currently plays Halo: Reach, Dan now plays for Australian MLG team 'Immunity' alongside teammates Benno, Heff and Voltage.
