Applegate was born in Massapequa, New York^[2] and raised in Connecticut.^[5][6][4] She is of Italian and German descent.^[1][4] She was a dancer and cheerleader for 14 years prior to her porn career.^[7][4]

Applegate began working as a stripper when she was 19 years old^[2][6] at the Gold Club in Hartford, Connecticut.^[5] She later worked as a nude model, fetish model and dance teacher.^[2]

Applegate entered the adult film industry in 2012 at the age of 22 and initially used the stage name Kaylee Evans.^[4][8] Her first scene, titled "Big Butt Bouncing", was for the Mofos.com website I Know That Girl.^[9] She decided to change her stage name after noticing that both the first name Kaylee and the last name Evans were common in the industry and she wanted to differentiate herself from other porn stars.^[8] She chose the first name A.J. because she liked unisex names and the last name Applegate because she was often told that she resembled Christina Applegate.^[8]

Applegate attended courses to earn a personal training certification.^[2] She became certified in Zumba in 2014.^[10]
