Jonathan Tea is a soulful singer songwriter making American roots rock. Tea’s sound blends strong, earthy vocals with well-crafted songs to create a sound that is familiar, yet will especially appeal to those who are looking for something a little bit outside of the box. Drawing from the best parts of the blues, classic country, and 70’s rock and combining them with a modern aesthetic, Tea delivers onstage with passion, tempered with moments of subtle restraint and sensitivity, inviting the crowd into his story and rewarding careful listeners with smart lyrics and a mature sense of phrasing and groove.
The California-born, Texas-raised, and now NYC/NJ shore-based artist’s intensely personal lyrics cover diverse topics ranging from the complexities of relationships, to depression, to lighthearted observational storytelling laced with a subtle sardonic wit. Dark Down Here, the first single from Tea’s new album, Coming Home, puts the microscope on the crippling power of depression. “This song has come to signify the place in my brain I don’t ever want to go again: it’s a dark and scary place where everything is out of control.” Less of You, the second single, is a rallying cry for those who are surrounded by negative people. Union Square is the true to life story of bizarre events that Tea encountered in one of New York City’s most iconic parks. “It’s a bittersweet ode to a place I love, warts and all.” Hear Me is about the crucial moment in a relationship where each person must decide if they care enough to fight for the love they’ve built, or let it all fall apart. The 10 song album, released July 21st, 2015, has received airplay on 90.5 WBJB-FM (NJ), and 91.7 FM WWWR-LP (OH).
Ultimately, Tea hopes to lift up others around him through his music and remind us all that there is a light in the darkness, but we may never find it unless we go looking for it.
Jonathan’s resume includes opening slots for Lydia Loveless and James Maddock, repeat performances at festivals like Singer-Songwriter Cape May and Launch Music Conference, and tour dates from Vermont to Baltimore and in major cities like NYC (Hill Country, National Underground, Arlene’s Grocery), Nashville (Belmont Taps, Roosters BBQ, National Underground), and LA (Room 5).
