Prior to joining The Atlantic in May 2017, he has spent a decade at Slate Magazine, most recently as deputy editor. Swansburg was named deputy editor of Slate magazine in 2014, previously serving as its editorial director and culture editor. 
Before that, Swansburg was deputy editor of The Boston Globe Ideas section and a senior editor of Legal Affairs. His writing has appeared in The Boston Globe, The New York TimesBook Review, New York, and in Slate, where he’s covered sports, television, and film. He’s also written extensively on American history.
