At 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 a motorist flagged Nix as he sat in his police car at a stoplight. When Nix made a U-turn to meet the motorist, an unnamed woman exited the passenger side of the vehicle, holding an unresponsive infant and talking frantically on the phone. The three-month infant named, Kingston, was being unresponsive and needed medical assistance.
Nix immediately went headed over to help. He grabbed the baby and began performing CPR. Not seeing any progression, he decided to take the baby with him inside of the patrol car to the hospital. She said the following to dispatch: "I'm not waiting on medics. ... I'm headed to the emergency room with the baby". With only about a half a mile away, Deputy Nix quickly arrived and the baby received helped.
The baby named Kingston is alive and doctors believe it was because of the actions of Deputy Nix. The hospital wrote: "Doctors also said that because of K9 Deputy Nix's actions, Baby Kingston is alive today... We are tremendously proud of Deputy Nix and we can already see that he and Baby Kingston will have a deep connection that will last a lifetime!"
