Devlan James grew up in New York City, the youngest of five children. Music runs in his blood. His grandfather was a well known band leader in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s.
Devlan got his start playing in small clubs around his native New York City. His first brush with success, though, came while living in Eugene, Oregon where he was signed to a record deal with Atlantic Records. Ultimately the only thing released was a single that appeared on a now obscure compilation record.
Devlan then moved to San Francisco in search of greener pastures.
In San Francisco Devlan switched to playing bass guitar, anchoring bands such as Elephant Gun, the Hoovers, and Color Zone. After a period of up and down success, Devlan switched gears and landed in Nashville. There he teamed up with guitarist Danny Parks, keyboardist Jimmy Wallace, bassist Don Kerce and drummer Paul Scholten to record what would become his debut album. "The Lookout" was released in September of 2012 and charted in the top 100 on Triple A and Rock radio stations in the US for over seven months.
In early 2013 Devlan brought together a new group of musicians based in his adopted hometown of Seattle. Enter James Howard on lead guitar, Andrew Cloutier on drums, and Scotty Harris on bass. After making their first public appearance in San Francisco at Sunset Sessions in February 2013 opening for John Hiatt, the band decamped to Seattle's Earwig Studio to record tracks for a new album. The result is "Mint Condition" released in November 2013.
Hailing from Oakland, CA, James Howard is an award winning guitarist and musician. When not adding his blistering lead guitar to the Devlan James Band, he performs regularly with his own band and as a solo artist in the Seattle area. Originally from Maine, Andrew Cloutier is a founding member of Left Hand Smoke and can often be heard drumming in Lee Oscar's band when not holding down the backbeat for Devlan James. Bassist Scotty Harris is another Yankee transplant from Maine. A boyhood friend of Andrew Cloutier, Scotty has played with numerous well known northwest acts including Lee Oscar and Michael Shrieve's Spellbinder. Trained as a saxophonist, Scotty brings a unique harmonic sensibility to his bass playing.
The Devlan James Band is currently readying the release of their new album Icons. [+]
