Scharf earned her BA in Art and Architectual History from Barnard College, her Master's in Library and Information Science from Columbia University, and her PhD in Educational Assessment from Rutgers University.
Scharf joined the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Van Houten Library as the Director of Reference and Instructional Services in April 2004. She serves as the library's liaison to the School of Management, History, Humanities and Social Sciences. Scharf's research interests include critical thinking, information literacy instruction and assessment, online communications, knowledge management and digital libraries. At NJIT, Scharf serves on the Committee for Undergraduate Education, the Subcommittee on the General University Requirements (GUR), the Program Assessment Committee, the Writing Committee, and the School of Management Assessment Committee. In addition, Scharf is a member of the American Library Association, the ACRL User Education Committee, and the Society for Competitive Intelligence (SCIP). At NJIT, Scharf created an assignment dealing with creating and revising an article on Wikipedia.
