In the years since its inception in 2010 during the heated summer months in Dallas, Texas - Black Dog Friday has been many things. With a full band, the sound can only be described as progressive southern rock & soul. With bluesy strums and twangy rhythm, their music flows through you and makes you feel the words and tones in your bones. And while as a solo act, Alex Gates brings that same rock and southern soul style to life through just his voice, 6 strings and 8 pounds of spruce and rosewood. With inspirations spreading from the popular (Kings of Leon, Johnny Cash, Black Crows, Damien Rice) to the obscure (The White Buffalo, James Bay, Jeff Buckley, Dave Fenley & The Good Deal), there’s bound to be a song, style, tempo or feeling to make everyone happy.

With a handful of studio and live recordings, Alex has made the band’s name through rigorous live performances. Constantly writing, booking shows and interacting with whomever will listen, he is constantly on the move to get more of the band’s music to the public. Raised in the church by his music minister father and taught guitar by his southern Alabama mother, it was only a matter of time before he took these skills and transformed them into something that melds his history with his passion and becomes something completely unique.

Over the years, Alex and Black Dog Friday (or BDF), have been able to enjoy some of the best things about being in a musical metropolis like Dallas. From headlining shows at Liquid Lounge and The Prophet Bar, to be supporting acts for artists/bands such as Ryan Star, Thriving Ivory and Jason Castro. Even making it into the semi-finals of prestigious songwriting contests Shiner Rising Star and the Rusty Weir Singer/Songwriter Competition. As of now, Alex is still plugging away booking shows, making calls and setting up tour dates throughout the south. There’s no venue too big or small, backyard birthday party, dive bar or street corner he won’t play. And he will cause he loves it. [+]
