Yang Ying (born 28 February 1989), better known by her stage name Angelababy, is a Chinese-born Hong Kong model, actress, and singer. Her stage name came from the combination of her English name "Angela" and her nickname "Baby". She is one of the New Four Dan Actresses in mainland China.

Early life

Yang was born on 28 February 1989 in Shanghai, to a father from Hong Kong, who's of half Chinese and half German descent, and a Shanghainese mother from Shanghai. Her birth name is Yang Ying (Cantonese: Yeung Wing). Her father runs a fashion business in Shanghai. She gained an interest in fashion as a child under her father's influence. She said in an interview, "Even though he [her father] sells more mature clothes, I loved going to his store and trying on new outfits, and mixing and matching them. It was fun. I think that's how I developed a passion for fashion." She is fluent in Mandarin, Shanghainese, Cantonese, and has a basic command of English.

Yang moved to Hong Kong when she was thirteen, and graduated from Notre Dame College. Although her English name is Angela, she was at times called "Baby" throughout her primary and secondary school years. When she started modeling, she combined these two names to Angelababy.


Angela Yeung Ying (better known as Angelababy) entered the entertainment industry when she was 14 years old, signing on as a model at Style International Management. In 2007, she became a back-up dancer for Jay Chou throughout his 2007-8 World Tour.

Angelababy debuted as an actress in the movie Trival Matters. She then starred in numerous films as supporting roles. In 2011, Angelababy had her first leading role in the film Love You You alongside Eddie Peng. She sung a duet with JJ Lin titled "Bottom of the Heart" as part of the movie's soundtrack.

In June 2012, Angelababy signed on with Huayi Brothers and set up her own personal studio. She began to shift her career into mainland China. In September, she starred in the kungfu movie Tai Chi O and its sequel Tai Chi Hero in October. The same year, she starred in First Time, a remake of the 2003 Korean movie ...ing. She plays the role of an adventurous university student, which garnered her the Most Anticipated Female Actress award at the thirteenth Chinese Film Media Awards.

In January 2013, Angelababy was chosen as the one of the four Fadan actresses along with Liu Shishi, Yang Mi and Ni Ni. In April, she was cast in her first TV drama, Love Yunge from the Desert in the role of the protagonist Yunge. In August, she played a policewoman in Crimes of Passion, which won her the Best Actress award at the China International Film Festival. In September, she played a supporting role as a beautiful courtesan in the crime action hit movie Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon, which won her the Most Popular Actress award at the twenty-first Beijing College Student Film Festival.

In January 2014, Angelababy was crowned the "2013 Weibo Goddess" at the Sina Weibo Awards Night. She was cast in the American film Hitman: Agent 47, marking her Hollywood debut. In October, she joined the cast of Hurry Up, Brother, a spin-off from the original South Korean variety programme Running Man. The series was a huge hit in China, achieving a whopping viewership rating of 4.2, and made Angelababy a household name. In December, she collaborated with fellow Hurry Up, Brother cast member in the romance film Love on the Cloud.

Angelababy was once again crowned "Weibo Goddess", as well as "Weibo Queen" for the year 2014. In 2015, she was cast in League of Gods as well as The Ferryman. In August, she starred alongside Ni Ni in Bride Wars, a remake of the 2009 american film. She additionally participated in the Hollywood science fiction film Independence Day: Resurgence.

In September 2015, Love Yunge from the Desert premiered on Hunan TV. The series was a commercial hit, and went on to surpass 8 billion views online. On December 5, Angelababy was awarded the Leaping Improvement award at the iQiyi All Star Carnival. On December 19, Mojin: The Lost Legend was released. Angelababy plays the love interest of Hu Bayi, the main character of the movie played by Chen Kun. The film was a huge commercial hit, topping box office charts upon its release. For the role, Angelababy won Best Supporting Actress at the 33rd Hundred Flowers Awards.

Angelababy was listed as one of Forbes' inaugural 30 under 30 Asian Celebrities under the film, music, television and sport category for the year 2016. In July, she co-starred alongside Jing Boran in the youth romance film Love O2O, based on Gu Man's novel Just One Smile is Very Alluring. She was additionally cast as the female lead in upcoming drama General & I.

Personal life

Yang had been dating Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming, who's 11 years her senior, for six years, but their relationship wasn't revealed to the public until February 2014. On 27 May 2015 they obtained their marriage certificate in Qingdao, China and their wedding banquet took place in Shanghai on 8 October 2015. The wedding banquet was reported to be one of the most lavish in China's history with a reported estimate of US$31 million. In the same month, Yang sued a Ruili clinic for US$80,000 for referring to her as a recipient of plastic surgery. An examination she underwent at a Beijing hospital concluded that her face showed no signs of prior surgical work.
