On the Friday morning of October 21st, 2016, a massive DDoS attack on the following sites occurred: Netflix

TwitterSpotifyGitHubVoxAirbnb, PayPalReddit and a dozen other websites. [1]

Timeline and impact

According to Dyn, a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack began at 7:00 a.m. (EDT) and was resolved by 9:20 a.m., however, a second attack was reported at 11:52 a.m. and Internet users began reporting problems about accessing websites.[4][6] Websites affected by the attack include AirbnbAmazonSpotifyBBCCNNEtsyGitHubThe New York TimesPayPalPinterestRedditRunescapeShopifySoundCloudTumblrTwitterVox MediaPlayStation Network, among others.[7][8][9][11][12][13]

The US Department of Homeland Security started an investigation into the attacks, according to a White House source.[2][14][15] No group of hackers has claimed responsibility.[16] Dyn's chief strategist said in an interview that the assaults on the company's servers were very complex and unlike everyday DDoS attacks. Dr. Barbara Simons, a member of the advisory board of the US Election Assistance Commission, said such attacks could affect Internet voting for overseas military or civilians.

It is unclear who is behind the attacks and whether the focus was on Dyn, or on the dozens of companies it provides services to. In the last few weeks there have been record-setting cyberattacks in the last few weeks that were seized. It has been reported that so-called "bot nets" to attack websites were released by hacker earlier this month. It is believed by a few experts in computer security firms insist that it was an instant job that probably took weeks and months deploy by competent people. [17]
