Geneo Grissom (born June 4, 1992) is an American football defensive end for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Oklahoma. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round with the 97th overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.[2][3][4]



College career

After redshirting in 2010 with the Sooners, Grissom played as a reserve defensive tackle in his 2011 and 2012, picking up 9 total tackles and one tackle for a loss.[5]

In 2013, Grissom saw his first career start come against ULM Warhawks in which he recorded two tackles. His first interception came on October 12 against the Texas Longhorns, which he returned 54 yards for a touchdown. In the Sugar Bowl against Alabama, Grissom recorded 2.5 sacks, broke up a pass, and recovered two fumbles. He returned one of these fumbles for an eight-yard touchdown and had a total of 34 return yards.[5]

As a senior at Oklahoma in 2014, Grissom was named an honorable mention for the All-Big 12 after recording 39 tackles and 3.5 sacks on the year.[6] Over his four seasons at Oklahoma, he registered 88 tackles, 8 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions while playing in 39 games with 12 starts.[7]

Professional career

On May 1, 2015, Grissom was selected in the third round (97th overall) by the New England Patriots in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was mainly used on special teams and as a reserve on defense his rookie season, finishing with six tackles and one sack.[7]

On September 3, 2016, he was released by the Patriots as part of final roster cuts and was signed to the practice squad the next day.[4][15] He was promoted to the active roster on October 15, 2016.[21] With Grissom on the roster, the Patriots won 14 games and earned the top seed for the AFC playoffs.

On February 5, 2017, Grissom was part of the Patriots team that won Super Bowl LI. In the game, the Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 34–28 in overtime.[14]

Grissom was released by the Patriots on September 2, 2017 and was signed to the practice squad the next day.[12][13] He was promoted to the active roster on September 22, 2017.[10] He was released by the Patriots on November 9, 2017 and was re-signed to the practice squad.[86][16] He was promoted back to the active roster on December 2, 2017.[11]

Personal life

On July 20, 2015, Grissom married his long-term college girlfriend, Haley Eastham. They have a dog named Nyla.
