Career

2013-2016: Vine and YouTube success

Hanna began uploading skits to Vine in late 2013, but only in 2014 she first gained recognition for her comedy on the app Vine, where she managed to accumulate just under five million followers.[4] In 2014, she also set up her main YouTube channel, Gabbie Hanna (formerly The Gabbie Show prior to her rebranding of her public image), which became popular for her 'Storytime' videos. She soon acquired over 5 million subscribers and over 600 million views.[5] In 2015, she competed and won season 4 of Dance Showdown with Matt Steffanina as her partner.[6]

She also set up a second channel, The Gabbie Vlogs, which has since gained over a million subscribers and 100 million views.[5] In 2016, Vine was shut down[47] due to a number of issues with the app, and Hanna moved all of her attention to YouTube.

In late 2016, Hanna joined the lip sync tour Drop the Mic, alongside fellow YouTubers Jack Baran, Ricky Dillon, Chachi Gonzales, and Andrew Lowe.[8] Amidst the tour, Hanna asked her fans dubbed "the showstoppers" to donate canned food and other goods so she can donate them to foundations and those in need of them.

In late November 2016, Hanna made her first stand up show at an improv comedy club in Los Angeles, California.

2017-present: Acting, musical releases and Adultolescence

Her debut single, "Out Loud", was released on September 6, 2017.[9] Her debut book, Adultolescence, was released on September 19, 2017. The book chronicles Hanna’s struggles throughout her life in a fun, poetic way. Following the release, Hanna went on a book tour from September 19 to 27 in eight locations, including Dallas, Houston, Chicago and New York City.[10] The single "Out Loud" was inspired by the poetry in Adultolescence.[11] In its first 24 hours on YouTube, the "Out Loud" lyric video collected 1.8 million views. In its first day, the single reached #3 on the US iTunes charts.[3] The official video was released mid-October. After the success of Out Loud, Hanna confirmed she would release an album.[3] Hanna’s second single, "Satellite" was released on November 21, 2017.

On July 2017 it was announced that the Talent Agency CAA signed Hanna and later on August she joined the social media team of MTV. From that, she hosted backstage for the MTV Video Music Awards in August and will co-host the revival of Total Request Live in October, with fellow Internet personalities Eva Gutowski and Gigi Gorgeous.[3] In August 2017, Hanna was hired to work as a social media correspondent for MTV's revival of Total Request Live.[3] In 2017, she joined the main cast of Escape the Night as 'the Vaudevillian' and appeared in seven episodes.[3][3] She had previously had a small role as Lindsey in Laid in America.[3]

In January of 2018, The Fine Bros posted a video of teenagers reacting to her and her content, and she was nominated by iHeartRadio for a Social Star Award at the 2018 ceremony.[3]
